Wikinews interviews John Wolfe, Democratic Party presidential challenger to Barack Obama

Sunday, May 20, 2012

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate John Wolfe, Jr. of Tennessee took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Wolfe, an attorney based out of Chattanooga, announced his intentions last year to challenge President Barack Obama in the Democratic Party presidential primaries. So far, he has appeared on the primary ballots in New Hampshire, Missouri, and Louisiana. In Louisiana, he had his strongest showing, winning 12 percent overall with over 15 percent in some congressional districts, qualifying him for Democratic National Convention delegates. However, because certain paperwork had not been filed, the party stripped Wolfe of the delegates. Wolfe says he will sue the party to receive them.

Wolfe will compete for additional delegates at the May 22 Arkansas primary and the May 29 Texas primary. He is the only challenger to Obama in Arkansas, where a May 10 Hendrix College poll of Democrats shows him with 38 percent support, just short of the 45 percent for Obama. Such an outing would top the margin of Texas prison inmate Keith Russell Judd, who finished 18 percent behind Obama with 41 percent in the West Virginia Democratic primary; the strongest showing yet against the incumbent president. Despite these prospects, the Democratic Party of Arkansas has already announced that if Wolfe wins any delegates in their primary, again, due to paperwork, the delegates will not be awarded. Wolfe will appear on the Texas ballot alongside Obama, activist Bob Ely, and historian Darcy Richardson, who ended his campaign last month.

Wolfe has previously run for U.S. Congress as the Democratic Party’s nominee. On his campaign website, he cites the influence “of the Pentagon, Wall Street, and corporations” on the Obama administration as a reason for his challenge, believing these negatively affect “loyal Americans, taxpayers and small businesses.” Wolfe calls for the usage of anti-trust laws to break up large banks, higher taxes on Wall Street, the creation of an “alternative federal reserve” to assist community banks, and the implementation of a single-payer health care system.

With Wikinews, Wolfe discusses his campaign, the presidency of Barack Obama, corporations, energy, the federal budget, immigration, and the nuclear situation in Iran among other issues.

Gm’s Hybrid Concept Vehicle}

GM’s Hybrid Concept Vehicle

Homer Molina

In a GM news announcement on February 10, 2006, the company announced the testing of a transit vehicle powered by General Motors’ hybrid technology, which will be used for Cleveland’s BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) automobile known as Silver Line. According to the recent GM news release, testing is currently being conducted by The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority.

The GM hybrid concept automobile is similar to the 21 automobiles that the Regional Transit Authority plans to purchase by the end of 2007. The recent GM news announcement reveals that Cleveland’s reasoning behind the decision to purchase GM’s hybrid-powered vehicles is because they offer a more economic fuel consumption, along with cleaner emissions than that of conventional bus transportation.

The Silver Line is just one aspect of The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s impending project, which hopes to better transit service by using more environmentally friendly automobiles, reducing traffic congestion, increasing pedestrian safety and supporting increased improvements along city avenues. The project is geared toward providing shorter travel times for passengers, which will enable them to have better access to school, work, home, medical facilities and the city’s recreational activities. The recent GM news announcement reveals the plan to have the Silver Line completely operational in 2008.

Public transportation buses, which are powered by GM’s hybrid technology are shown to be better for the environment, overall fuel consumption and customer’s wallets. Being more cost-effective than rail transportation is just one of the reasons that many commuters are deciding to take the bus. By combining GM’s hybrid technology, consumers will see reasonable rates and have the convenience of cleaner air.

“The General Motors hybrid diesel electric drive system for buses uses the most efficient parallel hybrid architecture available in the world today and is perfect for BRT initiatives,” said Tom Stephens, Group Vice President of GM Powertrain. In a recent GM news quote, Stephens added, “If the U.S. had only 1,000 GM hybrid powered buses operating in major cities, the cumulative savings would be more than 1.5 million gallons of fuel annually.”

There are currently 380 GM hybrid technology buses operating in 29 cities throughout the United States and Canada. During 2006, GM has scheduled deliver of 216 hybrid-powered buses to six American cities.

GM news is constantly surrounding the most innovative new designs, technology and creations that the company has to offer. As the world moves ahead, hybrid transportation is expected to gain in popularity each year. Among their many benefits, hybrid automobiles are especially practical to helping conserve fuel while maximizing air quality.

Thursday, February 7, 2008

Croatia’s sea and transport ministry said the UND Adriyatik, a Turkish freight ship caught fire in the Adriatic Sea 13 nautical miles west of the town of Rovinj on the early morning hours of February 6, 2008. An SOS was launched at 4.04 local time. It said that the 193-metre long ship was sailing from Istanbul in Turkey to Trieste in Italy and was carrying 200 trucks and nine tons of dangerous material, in addition to between 100 and 200 tons of ship fuel, causing fears of environmental damage. An official said Croatian fire-fighting planes and ships were trying to extinguish the blaze. As the fire started inside the ship, there was no way of extinguishing it from the outside. The ship’s 22 crew members and nine passengers were rescued by the Greek ship Ikarus Palace that was sailing nearby and were on their way to Venice.

There were fears of an explosion if the fire was to reach the fuel tanks. Also, the water currents were pushing the ship towards the Croatian coast. However, reports said the fire was diminishing by the end of the day.

Urgent Loan For Tenant: Financial Security Without Collaterals}

Submitted by: Richard Shepherd

A homeowner has a major advantage over a tenant in the manner that, the ownership of a house gives the former a tremendous sense of financial security and hence, mental peace. During any financial crisis, the home is usually one of the best securities which can be placed as collateral against a loan, to secure a substantial amount of loan to tide over that emergency. A tenant has no such option of collaterals and hence, needs to look for alternative solutions of unsecured loans. Most lenders may consider the unsecured loans to be a high risk category investment and hence, shy away form providing the tenant with a substantial loan amount, making it difficult for him to meet any urgent financial emergencies. However, lenders have realized this short fall in their services towards the tenants and have therefore, some specific category loans like the urgent loan for tenant, to help non homeowners meet their financial crisis with ease.

The urgent loan for tenant is a convenient and quick way for an individual to meet urgent requirements for funds through an unsecured loan format, without having to run helter skelter to make arrangements for suitable collateral to secure a substantial loan amount. Although, these loans come at a higher rate of interest than the secured loans, yet they are advantageous for any potential borrower who wants to avoid the risk of placing valuable collateral as guarantee for loan repayment. Also, the borrower can manage to get access to a cheaper deal from a reliable lender, provided he has done sufficient groundwork and background research to compare the various lenders and the loan options provided by them in this specific loan category of urgent loan for tenant.

Most of the lenders offering the urgent loan for tenant have further added speed and convenience to the process by making it possible for every borrower to conduct the transaction online. Now, all one needs to do is fill up an online application form with basic personal and financial details, including the details of their bank account, where they want the loan amount to be transferred after the approval by the lender. The lender provides instant approval decisions on the loans once he has verified the accuracy of the information provided by the borrower.

The loan amount of the urgent loan for tenant gets transferred to the borrower’s account within 24 hours of the loan approval, making it possible for the borrower to meet any financial requirements which he may be having currently. Also, since the lender does not place any restriction clause on the manner of expenditure of these loans, the borrower can use them like any other personal loan and for any and every financial purpose, which he deems fit. So, be it an urgent medical expenditure or the charges of car repair, a tenant can now safely undertake any and every financial expenditure even during a cash crunch, thanks to these specific category loans, specially introduced to cater to his financial needs.

Midget car racer Bryan Clauson dies aged 27

Wednesday, August 10, 2016

US racing driver and Carmichael, California native Bryan Clauson died Sunday night from injuries sustained after a crash during Saturday’s Belleville Midget Nationals quarter midget race in Kansas. He was 27 years old.

On lap 14 of the race, Clauson took the lead when he collided with a lapped car in turn four and hit the track’s guardrail. The contact forced his car into a roll, landing on its side, where it was struck by Ryan Greth’s car. The race was suspended under a red flag as track workers removed Clauson from his vehicle, a process that took 30 minutes to complete. He was airlifted to Bryan Medical Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was reported to be in critical condition. On Monday, Clauson’s family released a statement to United States Auto Club (USAC) officials announcing Clauson had died from his injuries. USAC CEO Kevin Miller stated, “This is truly one of the darkest days in the 60-year history of the United States Auto Club. Not only have we lost one of our greatest USAC champions, we’ve lost a true ambassador for all of motorsports.”

The race was the 116th of the year for Clauson as part of a campaign known as the Circular Insanity Tour, in which he attempted to run 200 races in 2016. Entering the Belleville Nationals, he had won 27 feature races. He was a three-time USAC National Midget and two-time USAC National Sprint Car champion with over 170 wins in USAC-sanctioned events, including a Chili Bowl Nationals win in 2014. He competed in stock car racing, driving in NASCAR and the ARCA Racing Series, winning a race in the latter. He ran 26 Busch Series (now Xfinity Series) races in 2007 and 2008 for Chip Ganassi Racing, recording a best finish of fifth at Kentucky Speedway in 2008. In 2008, he attempted three Sprint Cup Series races for Ganassi, but failed to qualify for all three. Clauson also ran three Indianapolis 500 events, one of which included the 100th running in 2016, where he finished 23rd.

In the previous night’s race, Clauson crashed into Morgan Frewaldt’s car in a similar location to his accident on Saturday. Clauson’s team reported he was sore after the impact, but he tweeted his thanks to his safety equipment and chassis manufacturer for keeping him safe.

He is survived by his parents, Tim and Diana, his sister, Taylor and his fiancé, Lauren Stewart.

North American roads suffer from dramatic thaws and freezes

Monday, January 8, 2007

Major city roads across North America are suffering from an early surge in potholes due to the dramatic freezes and thaws this month, some several feet across and inches deep. The potholes are caused by water seeping into cracks during warm weather, and pushing concrete apart when it freezes. Traffic erodes chunks of concrete from the cracks to form holes that continuously grow larger.

While car repair shops are experiencing a boom in business, city budgets are being hit with the costs of patching potholes. Thierry Larivée, an infrastructure spokesman in Montréal, Canada, says about 20 pothole patrols are working throughout the city. They are expected to continue work until at least Friday.

Craig Bryson, spokesman for the Road Commission for Oakland County in Michigan, United States, reports problems on unpaved roads as well. “The warmer weather is also playing havoc with gravel roads; the top layer of dirt thaws, but remains frozen about 10 inches below the surface. Surface water has no place to go. This creates a rutted, soupy road, especially in low-lying areas.”

Environment Canada meteorologist René Héroux attributes the unseasonable thaw to warm winds from the southwest. Environment Canada predicts a new cold front on Thursday.
